Dear Friends,

Some of you have been asking how recent events in the US are likely to affect us and our work. The short answer is that every effort to undermine equity and unravel positive change inspires us to double down on our work to ensure that everyone has access to quality healthcare, no matter where they were born or what language they speak.

In fact, at our leadership retreat last week (pictured below), we focused on how to confront and talk about racism, sexism, classism, and other concerning “isms” and created a manifesto for inclusion.

The uncertainty around the future of USAID and promised mass deportations from the US will no doubt have profound effects on our partners and the communities we serve. Many of the breadwinners who left Guatemala for the US because they could not afford to feed their families will be forced to return, and the remittances they sent their families from the US will stop. We anticipate this could lead to a spike in Guatemala’s already dire malnutrition and stunting rates. In response, we will continue working with families to find sustainable ways to feed their children so they can look forward to healthy and productive futures.

What can you do? Stay informed; resist the temptation to duck and cover. Continue to move toward positive change in whatever way works for you. Give to organizations you believe in so we can stay steady and strong in the face of these new challenges.

I am so grateful for our remarkable community. Knowing you’re with us makes a tremendous difference.

Onward!
